Vintage Quilt Turn Down * Ottawa

Reddick Mansion to host 2nd Vintage Quilt Turn Down on July 15th and 16th.  During the “Turn Down” vintage quilts are stacked on a bed and as each quilt is “turned down” and displayed, the unique story of each quilt is told – who made it, when, where and for what reason.  Other details of the quilt are also discussed including its fabrics, stitching, and pattern.  The Turn Downs will be at 11am and 2pm on Saturday, July 15th and 2pm on Sunday, July 16th.
Back in early June, the Association made a public request of the community, looking for vintage quilts to be a part of the event.  We were very happy with the peoples generosity said Joyce Kellogg, chair of the event.  We will have 18-20 vintage quilts – many from the local area and some as far away as the Chicago suburbs.  One family has offered us six quilts from their family to be par of our event.
During the presentations, white gloves will be worn by the volunteers handling the quilts and Kellogg will tell the story of each quilt.  We will have appliqued and pieced quilts, some embroidered and all hand-stitched according to Kellogg.  One of the quilts was made in the 1940’s by a group of friends for a lady suffering from cancer.  Another was made during the Depression on  a farm in Indiana from scraps of seed bags.
A new addition to this years turmdown:  at least 2-3 tables of quilting fabric  will also be available for sale.  Donated by Joyce Kellogg, the fabric will range from “fat Quarters” to yardage goods and will be measured and wrapped for easy purchase.
After the quilt presentation, refreshments will be served.  Cost is $7 per person and attendance is limited to 20 people per session in order to insure everyone is able to see the quilts.  For more information, please call the Mansion at 815.433.6100.  All money raised will be used for the maintenance and restoration of the Reddick Mansion.
