7th Annual Living Works Community Walk for Suicide Prevention
Background: Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among youth 15 -24 years of age, and our community has lost too many of its own young people to suicide. In June, 2010 a group of concerned citizens from Princeton Illinois and surrounding communities held the first Living Works Suicide Walk with the intention of raising money to educate the public that suicide is preventable.
Objective: The walk remembers those we have lost and also celebrates the affirmation of life by letting our children know that “Living Works.”
Description: This year’s walk will take place on Saturday, June 3rd at 10am. (registration at 9am) It will begin at Darius miller Park in Princeton and proceed to Zearing Park for closing ceremonies including presentations, music, a raffle, a balloon launch and a signing wall where survivors of suicide may express their thought and memories of those they have lost.
Where Will Your Donation Go: We are raising funds to offer two-day ASIST workshops, and grief support to those who’ve lost loved ones to suicide. We have also donated to such organizations as community Partners Against Substance Abuse and Second Story. Long-range goals include attracting mental health care professionals to treat at-risk individuals locally ,and engaging the community in addressing the reasons that drive people to consider suicide.
