The Carolina Panthers tweeted that they will start Baker Mayfield at quarterback next Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. Interim coach Steve Wilks told reporters Monday morning that PJ Walker is dealing with a high ankle sprain suffered in Thursday night’s win over the Atlanta Falcons, placing Mayfield back into the starting lineup.
Wilks said that while Walker played through the injury, he wouldn’t be available against Baltimore. The coach did not indicate Walker’s timeline to return but doesn’t anticipate the QB going on injured reserve at this point.
Mayfield started the Panthers’ first five games of the season and appeared in one other contest, throwing for 1,117 yards and six touchdowns against four interceptions. He suffered an ankle injury in Week 5 that had Walker taking over the starting role.
The Panthers were 1-4 in games started by Mayfield, versus posting a 2-3 record in the five games started by Walker.
